Australia’s largest surf & travel group are stoked to announce branching out to Indonesia. Mojosurf will be offering guided surf adventures throughout Java, Bali, Lombok and Nusa Lembongan as well as surf courses around Bali from their Canggu based Mojo Dojo, and have commissioned Rat & Dragon to film the lot.

“Shooting surfers has always been a big ambition of mine,” director and DoP Saxon tells us. “You’ve got to be a strong swimmer and technically confident to stay safe and deliver good results. You may get a few coral cuts – it’s all worth it as seeing these very skilled surfers though the back of a barrel is just mind blowing.”

The Royal Commonwealth Society Kuala Lumpur is proud to announce ‘The Indian Ocean – Terrains of Meaning and Materiality: Technology and Cultural Commerce’, the first in a series of events focussing on shared histories and cultural connections of Africa, the Middle East, Asia and South East Asia.

Commissioned by the University of Nottingham, Rat & Dragon cover the event and gather audience reactions in short interviews. “Working with usually camera shy academics was quite different to our usual crowd,” explains producer Nicola. “So many ideas and complex theories, short soundbites are nearly impossible.

Everyone’s really pleased with the coverage through and at the end of the day, everyone wanted to be on camera one more time. The atmosphere was great.”

Working with tourism boards traditionally results in bright, sunny, happy interpretations of destinations. Penang, Malaysia has all this to offer but for the Rat & Dragon team, it was the nighttime hustle and bustle of the island’s main city that held most magic.

In an experimental portfolio production the team explore the flip side of the city’s historic centre, hidden lane ways and world class street art. “We really wanted to show Georgetown’s nighttime soul,” explains producer Nicola, who also directed the piece, “something you usually only get to experience when you’re here. We’ve loved the project and can’t wait to produce more like it”.

Eat, Sleep, Office, Repeat. The new 9-5 may be a 8-7 plus overtime on 3 jobs to keep afloat, but not if you’re living in sunny Thailand’s most famous marine reserve.

The Rat & Dragon team are on location shooting a rather different ‘day in the life’ of Maca, one of the island’s resident dive instructors. “It may take a few seconds to clock on to her actual routine,” explains producer Nicola, “as we tell her story by winding time backwards.”

“The local team have been fantastic,” director Saxon Yuen tells us, “and despite its party reputation, Phi Phi is an incredibly beautiful place”. Thinking of a career change?

This March, Rat & Dragon are on production shooting Stray Asia‘s first commercial expedition through Vietnam.

Well known for it’s ‘off the beaten track’ adventures, Stray’s new Vietnam product will take intrepid travellers from Ho Chi Minh City to Hanoi and beyond.

“We’re two thirds through our Epic Journey and have shot an incredible variety of landscapes, people and experiences,” explains director Saxon Yuen. “Getting to trek through mountains and caves, capture Vietnam’s natural beauty and meeting real characters along the way is yet another treat for our lenses.”

AutoDrive has been selected for the official lineup of the 2014 Sedona International Film Festival.

“This is our 4th festival, heading to the dessert has never been so exciting”, director Rory O’Donnell tells us. “We’ve had fantastic reception so far so I can’t wait to share AutoDrive with even more short film enthusiasts.

In 2014, STA Travel‘s brand new Insider Intel series aims to deliver just that. Produced by Rat & Dragon, the 6-part series follows real-life residents of some of the world’s most exciting cities and destinations as they go about their daily lives.

“Covering Berlin, Moscow, the Trans-Siberian, Tokyo, Beijing and Bangkok, the films give me a fresh and genuine insight into what you can experience in other cities,” explains presenter Joy, “it’s a fantastic project to be part of!”

To kickstart Rat & Dragon‘s global film portfolio, director Saxon and producer Nicola are this December setting off on an epic mission.

Travelling overland from Hyde Park London to Hyde Park Sydney, the core team will meet up with local crew along the way to produce a 6 part series for STA Travel and films for tour company Stray and surf and adventure collective Mojosurf, amongst others.

“Undertaking such a huge travel project alone is quite an undertaking”, explains producer Nicola, “but producing commercially successful films along the way is going to need great support from our crews around the world. Personally, we can’t wait to get started.”
